Unknown Artist, III Style (35-45 A.D.) Pompeii
This panel comes from a thermopolium opening onto the “Via dell’Abbondanza”, which differs from all other sites in the excellent state of preservation of its paintings. This beautiful panel was originally the central niche of the West wall of the triclinium (10), in which a decorative pattern attributable to the mature III Style can be discerned. The scene represents Bellerophon in the act of breaking in Pegasus (the winged horse with which the hero is to fight Chimera) using the reins he receveid as a gift from the Goddess Athena, depicted here with golden helmet and shield. The composition in which the group is inserted is the result of the masterly organisation of space in superimposed planes, in which the insersection of diagonal lines greatly accentuates the idea of movement.
