inc. 9¼ x 14
Unknown Artist, IV Style (55-79 A.D.) Pompeii
This panel, detached together with many others which were later lost, comes from a residential villa dating back to at least the 1st Century B.C., it was excavated privately between 1903 and 1904 within the territory of “Boscoreale” and later covered up again. The area (16) to which it belonged was decorated in yellow with architectural perspectives and festoons and with figures hovering in flight at the centre of the walls. From the South wall comes the little naked Eros holding a rhyton and bucket, symbols painted in grey with white highlighting, extremely effective in conveying the metallic effect of the silver.
